Blue Demons face UConn and Butler on the weekend
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis begins the BIG EAST portion of the schedule welcoming the UConn Huskies to XS Tennis Village prior to a meeting with the Butler Bulldogs in Indianapolis to conclude the weekend.
The match between DePaul and UConn marks the first time the two programs meet since the Huskies moved back to the BIG EAST in 2020. In the last matchup, the Blue Demons won in convincing fashion 7-0 on Apr. 7, 2012. DePaul is currently undefeated in two matches all-time against UConn. First serve is Friday, Feb. 23 at 11:00 A.M. CST at XS Tennis Village.
Following Friday's action, the Scarlet and Blue head to Indianapolis, Ind. for the first conference road match of the 2023-24 campaign to face Butler. DePaul rides a nine-game winning streak against the Bulldogs including a 4-2 victory in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals a season ago. The contest is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 25 at 10:00 A.M. CST in the Butler Bubble.
DePaul (6-5) split its two matches last weekend while facing Notre Dame and Illinois State. After dropping the match up with the Fighting Irish, the Blue Demons rebounded to pick up a 4-3 victory over the RedBirds on Sunday. DePaul gained a quick advantage after the tandem of senior Greta Carbone and Freshman Sasha Stula won 6-1 on court two in doubles action. The duo of juniors Eva Goncharov and Eleanor Nobbs displayed a dominant performance with the 6-0 shoutout on court three.
In singles play, Goncharov continued a successful effort. The Canadian won the first set 6-2 to take a commanding lead over the Redbirds' Zoe Limparis in the no. 6 spot. Goncharov was victorious with a 6-1 advantage in the second set to earn a point for the Blue Demons. Carbone and graduate student Emily Casati followed suit, each winning a match on court four and five respectively.
UConn (5-3) heads into the weekend after falling to Rutgers 2-5. Isabel Petri Bere leads the Huskies with a 16-6 overall record including a 5-2 showing in dual competition. Head Coach Glenn Marshall has been at the helm of the women's tennis program in Storrs since 1997. Last season, Marshall directed UConn to victory in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament.
Butler (8-4) are winners in three of its last four matches with the only loss to Notre Dame. The Bulldogs are unbeaten at the Butler Bubble this season in three matches. Stephanie Wooten-Quijada is in her first year at the helm of the women's tennis program with previous head coaching experience at the University of New Mexico in 2017 and 2018.
