Blue Demons improve to 5-0 at XS Tennis
CHICAGO – It was all Blue Demons from start to finish on Friday afternoon as DePaul women's tennis blanked conference foe Connecticut, 7-0, to open BIG EAST play.
With the victory, DePaul improved to 7-5 on the season while moving to a perfect 5-0 on its home court at XS Tennis Village.
In doubles action, the tandem of graduate students Yuliya Kizelbasheva and Emily Casati picked up their first win at No. 1 dismantling UConn's Petri Bere and Wright, 6-4. After falling behind 0-3, Greta Carbone and Sasha Stula stormed back to win six of the next seven games and the match, 6-4, on court two.
The Blue Demons started strong in singles play, winning the first set on five of six courts. Casati earned DePaul its second point of the day and improved her win streak to six-straight matches with a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 5.
With a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court four, Carbone won her fourth-consecutive match and extended DePaul's lead to 3-0.
Freshman Sasha Stula shined bright, claiming her first collegiate dual match, with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hinshaw at No. 3 to clinch the match for the Blue Demons.
Eva Goncharov moved to 5-2 this spring behind a 7-6 (2), 6-1 triumph at No. 6. Junior Eleanor Nobbs earned her first win at the top singles position by way of a 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (10-2) score. After dropping a break in the second set, Nobbs came out firing in the third-set tiebreaker, winning the first eight points and eventually coming away with a 10-2 victory.
Kizelbasheva put the exclamation point on the afternoon for the Blue Demons at No. 2, battling back from dropping the first set to taking the second 7-5 and sealing the deal on a 12-10 third-set tiebreaker.
Up Next: DePaul returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 25 with a trip over to Indianapolis to face Butler. First serve from the Butler Bubble is set for 10 a.m. CST.
