Blue Demons host Georgetown, Creighton
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis looks to remain unbeaten at home this season with weekend matchups against BIG EAST programs Georgetown and Creighton, March 22-23.
DePaul and Georgetown last met on the courts in Washington, D.C. last season. The Blue Demons outlasted the Hoyas to earn a 4-2 victory. Yuliya Kizelbasheva picked up a win on singles court one 6-4, 7-5, while No. 2 singles, Hannah Smith gained another point with a 6-3, 6-3 advantage. This time around, first serve is set for Friday, March 22 at 12:30 P.M. CT at XS Tennis Village. Following Friday's action, DePaul plays host to the Creighton Bluejays. In the meetings dating back to the 2015-16 campaign, the Scarlet and Blue have won seven of the eight contests. The match is scheduled to begin on Saturday, March 23 at 12:30 P.M. CST at XS Tennis Village.
DePaul (10-6) returns to action after a two-week reprieve of competition. Last time out, the Blue Demons picked up a 5-2 win over Marquette improving to 3-0 in BIG EAST conference play on Friday, March 8. The Blue Demons tallied a quick first point with dominant doubles performances. Graduate students Emily Casati and Kizelbasheva clinched a 6-1 triumph on court two and the duo of senior Greta Carbone and sophomore Hannah Smith notched a 6-3 decision in the No. 1 slot. Casati and Kizelbasheva extended their winning streak to five and hold a 16-6 overall record on the season.
In singles play, four Blue Demons picked up victories, all in straight sets. Eleanor Nobbs took down Marquette's Emma Davis 6-1, 6-2 on court two. Kizelbasheva and Casati continued the momentum from the doubles match with both clinching wins of the 6-2, 6-2 variety on courts three and five respectively. Casati will be in search of her tenth-straight singles victory in the contest with Georgetown. Carbone tallied a win 6-4, 6-3 to move to a 5-1 record on court four.
Georgetown (5-10) earned a 6-1 victory over Seton Hall in South Orange, N. J. on March 16. However, it has been tough sledding as of late for the Hoyas. Prior to the win, Georgetown was on a four-game slide including defeats against Dartmouth College and Rhode Island at home. Freshman Emily Novikov has found success on court three in singles play, boasting four wins in five matches and an 8-3 record during the dual season. Head coach Freddy Mesmer took over the reins of the program ahead of the 2021-22 season after joining the staff in 2019.
Creighton (8-5) enters the weekend after a 7-0 shoutout win against Saint Joseph's. No. 1 singles, Malvika Shukla leads the charge for the Bluejays with an 8-5 dual season record. Long-time head coach, Tom Lilly is in his 27th season at the helm of the Creighton women's tennis program. A year ago, Lilly maneuvered the Bluejays to a 17-8 overall record and a spot in the BIG EAST Championship match for the first time in school history.
