Women’s Tennis Rolls Past Villanova to Advance to BIG EAST Semifinals

Blue Demons down Wildcats, 4-1
CAYCE, S.C. – A 24-hour delay didn't matter in the end as DePaul women's tennis dominated in their BIG EAST Tournament debut, picking up a 4-1 decision over No. 7 Villanova on Saturday morning at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center. With the victory, the Blue Demons advance to Sunday's semifinal round against St . John's.
DePaul (16-7) made quick work of the doubles point, sweeping courts one and two to take an early 1-0 advantage. Greta Carbone and Hannah Smith improved to 11-4 at No. 1 this season with an impressive 6-0 defeat over Ami Grace Dougah and Miriam Gondorova of Villanova. With their 10th win in their last 11 matches, the duo of Emily Casati and Yuliya Kizelbasheva clinched the doubles point for the Blue Demons by a 6-0 decision against Emily Callahan and Emily Gehrig.
In singles play, junior Eleanor Nobbs put on a masterful performance with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 to put the Blue Demons in front 2-0.
Villanova (10-13) earned a win on court one as Dougah took a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set decision against Smith, snapping a two-match win streak for the Blue Demon sophomore.
Kizelbasheva, appearing in her fifth conference tournament, showed off her veteran experience, taking down Jenna Stevens 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.
On court six, junior Eva Goncharov clinched the match for the Blue Demons in lopsided fashion, 6-1, 6-2. Goncharov moved to 7-3 on the dual season at No. 6.
Up Next: The Blue Demons will face sixth-seeded St. John's in Sunday's semifinal round. Start time is to be decided. The two sides squared off during the regular season with DePaul earning a decisive 4-0 victory on April 5 in New York. The Red Storm are 10-7 on the season.
