DePaul allows one shot attempt in 2-0 victory
CHICAGO – DePaul women's soccer defeated Lindenwood in a dominant 2-0 shutout decision at Wish Field, Thursday evening. The Blue Demons' performance marked their second straight victory and second overall, with DePaul holding the Lions to just one shot attempt during the match.
"I'm proud of the team for another shutout, and for scoring two goals in the run of play," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "Coming off back-to-back wins, the goal is to maintain momentum, instill belief, and continue improving on the last two performances. Division-I soccer is hard—every game is a challenge and presents its own unique difficulties. We approached this game the same way, with a full scouting report, really focusing on what we needed to do to be successful, and setting team goals. We were able to come out and achieve those goals."
DePaul (2-4-1) posted its best offensive performance of the season, with nine different Blue Demons attempting 11 shots and scoring a season-high two goals. Elena Milam recorded her third shutout of the season in goal, adding to the seven shutouts she has tallied in her career. Beth Smyth and Mia Veldman attempted their first shots of the season, and Briley Hill also recorded her first assist of the season.
While Lindenwood (4-4) was shut out for the third time this season, they played a physical brand of soccer, making for a battle from start to finish.
"It was in the scouting report: they are very physical and won't give up," said coach O'Brien. "They've earned three penalty kicks this season, which is a lot in a short time period. To me, that indicates they are gritty and relentless, earning every opportunity they get. I thought it was a fair, physical battle throughout."
Despite controlling 49% of possession on Thursday night, Lindenwood found themselves evenly matched in the first half but ultimately overwhelmed in the second as DePaul's relentless attack turned the tide. The Lions' goalkeeper tandem of Caroline Ritter and Jordan Hollingsworth each conceded one goal in their respective halves, with Ritter adding one save and Hollingsworth contributing two.
How it Happened
Like their first victory against UIC one week ago, the Blue Demons came out of the gates running, scoring a goal in the 12th minute. On a breakaway possession, junior Briley Hill sent a ball across the box towards the center of the net, leading to a Lindenwood defender scoring an own goal to start the evening.
The remainder of the first half was a battle, with neither team advancing the ball enough to get a shot to fall.
Lindenwood's lone shot attempt came in the 18th minute on a Georgia Pardalos strike that was saved by Elena Milam.
In the 33rd minute, DePaul sent their second shot attempt screaming towards the goal, but Mya Gardner's shot fell just short.
Towards the end of the first half, the Blue Demons began to push back against the Lions' prowl, with Nahla Dominguez and Fabienne Doerig each attempting shots in the 42nd and 43rd minutes, respectively. Neither shot found the back of the net, and the first half concluded with a 1-0 Blue Demon lead.
The second forty-five minutes proved to be a different story for the Blue Demons, who attempted eight shots, controlled possession, and dominated offensively.
In a thirteen-minute stretch between the 50th and 63rd minutes, DePaul attempted five shots in total.
Beth Smyth was the first Blue Demon to start the shot spree in the 50th minute, sending her first shot attempt of the season wide left.
Lea Eisenring and Mia Veldman followed suit, coming up just short on their shots during the Blue Demon offensive attack.
In the 72nd minute, Lindenwood's coaching staff was issued a yellow card following a free-kick call in favor of the Blue Demons. DePaul recorded 13 fouls to Lindenwood's 9, reflecting a physical but even game on the scoreboard.
Briley Hill and Freya Jupp each attempted shots in the final fifteen minutes, but it was Jupp who eventually capitalized with a 90th-minute goal, marking her second of the season, taming the Lions, and securing the victory for DePaul.
