Klemp leads Blue Demons with 13 kills
CHICAGO - DePaul volleyball concluded the DePaul / UIC Invite with a 4-1 loss Saturday evening, falling to Bowling Green in four sets (23-25, 19-25, 25-15, 23-25). The Blue Demons fall to 6-3 on the season, while the Falcons improve to 5-4.
The Blue Demons were led on offense by Audrey Klemp for the second consecutive game, who recorded 13 kills and 4 blocks. Fellow graduate student Jill Pressly poured in 12 kills and seven digs on the night.
Freshman Amanda Saeger notched 23 assists and nine digs, while senior Ashley Cudiamat added 15 assists and seven digs of her own.
Senior Aly Kindelberger led the team with six blocks, while sophomore Yagmur Yavuz contributed four.
Bowling Green was led by junior Lauryn Hovey with 17 kills and seven digs.
"That match will serve as a turning point for this group," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"Bowling Green played one of their best complete matches and it was their competitive fire that fueled them. Incredible response for our group to stretch a tough first two sets into a solid third set and a fourth set with three swing opportunities to stretch it in the fifth. We didn't execute in those moments, but we fought to give ourselves the opportunity, and that needs to be the biggest takeaway. Monday will have a higher gear, because we know what we must become and can become as a team, and we will chase it harder than ever. The loss stings, but it will serve us the rest of the season."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: DePaul jumped out in front early with a 6-0 run, including two aces from freshman Abby Cahill. Bowling Green then went on a 7-0 run of their own, to take lead 9-7. The Falcons retained the lead until DePaul tied it at 20 with a block from Klemp and Scholz. The teams traded points until two consecutive kills from junior Lauryn Hovey earned the set 25-23 set victory for Bowling Green.
SET TWO: Bowling Green pushed in front early with another 6-0 run, but DePaul pulled even with consecutive kills from Kindelberger and Pressly. It remained close late until the Falcons went on a 5-0, and a kill from sophomore Amanda Otten earned Bowling Green the set, 25-19.
SET THREE: DePaul retained the lead the entire set and never looked back, opening with two consecutive Falcon errors. Five kills from Klemp and three from Pressly sealed the 25-15 set win for the Blue Demons.
SET FOUR: The fourth set was another close one, with the teams swapping kills for the first 20 points of the set, including 3-0 runs by both sides. Yavuz buried a kill for the Blue Demons, but Bowling Green Alexis Mettille tallied three late kills to end the match with a 25-23 win.
