Santiago Davila earns first shutout in scoreless affair
CHICAGO – DePaul men's soccer drew a 0-0 decision to Xavier on Saturday afternoon at Wish Field, earning a critical point in BIG EAST play. The Blue Demons moved to 3-4-2 in 2024 and 0-1-1 in conference action while the Musketeers own a 4-2-4 record including a 1-0-1 mark in league competition.
While Xavier owned possession for the large part of the first half, DePaul came out of the intermission with an intensified press and pursuit of chances which led to four second-half shots.
Graduate forward Logan Finnegan had the best opportunity of the match when he earned a free kick just outside the box in the 81st minute, but he couldn't convert to open the score line.
Tyson Amoo-Mensah and Liam Mullins also had quality chances that would not reach the back of the net.
DePaul goalkeeper Santiago Davilla earned the first shutout of his career with four saves on the afternoon.
How it Happened
Xavier opened the game with a trio of shots in the first 13 minutes of action, setting the tone for the half.
The two sides were scoreless at the half, with the visitors holding an 8-0 edge in shots after the first 45 minutes.
In the 60th minute, the officiating crew took a look at a potential penalty in the box that would have awarded the Blue Demons a penalty kick but ruled no penalty resulting in a Musketeers goal kick.
On a breakaway to goal in transition in the 81st minute, Finnegan was taken down just outside the box which prompted a red card to be issued to Xavier's Ekene Okeke. With a man up advantage for the final nine minute, DePaul was awarded a free kick with Finnegan striking the ball right to the mouth of the goal and into the hands of Xavier's keeper.
The Blue Demons earned two more corners in the 83rd and 84th minute but couldn't punch through to provide the late-game heroics.
Up Next
DePaul will travel to Omaha, Neb., on Friday, Oct. 4, to Creighton for another BIG EAST matchup. Kick-off is slated for 6:30 p.m., and the game will air live on FloFC.
