Krasowski inches closer to Blue Demon record
SAN DIEGO -Â Â DePaul volleyball opened the San Diego State Invitational with a hard-fought loss Thursday night, falling in four sets to host San Diego State, (21-25, 25-20, 16-25, 22-25). The Blue Demons move to 3-1 on the season.
DePaul was paced by pin hitter Audrey Klemp on offense, who tallied 14 kills on the night. Outside hitter Jill Pressly poured in 10 kills of her own.
Freshman setter Amanda Saeger was a bright spot for the Blue Demons, tallying 20 assists and 10 digs, for her second career double-double. Fellow setter Ashley Cudiamat also recorded her third consecutive double-double of the season, with 15 assists and 10 digs.
Libero Rachel Krasowski continues to push toward the DePaul volleyball all-time digs record, adding 15 on the night, along with four assists. Krasowski is just 14 digs away from breaking the record set by Susanne Fogarty in 1991.
San Diego State (3-1) was led by juniors Madison Corf and Taylor Underwood, who each posted 16 kills.
"A lot of positives out of that match," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"They took to their serve and use it to get us out of system in order to set up the kill they wanted. We had so many great plays on defense and with our serve as well. In the end, their offense heated up at key times while ours stalled a little bit. I'm excited for what this match can teach us, and the silver lining is that we can get back on the horse tomorrow. We don't have to wait until Friday to show a response."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: Both sides opened strong, with DePaul jumping out to a four-point lead. The teams remained close as six different Blue Demons recorded kills during the set, and sophomore Nora Mannion added an ace. DePaul could not overcome four errors late and the Aztecs took the set 25-21.
Â
SET TWO: DePaul came out strong again in set two and never relinquished the lead, leading by as many as six points in the middle of the set. The Aztecs pulled within three, but kills from Pressly and junior Katelynn Oxley sealed the 25-20 set victory for the Blue Demons.
Â
SET THREE: Three Aztec errors put DePaul up early, but set three belonged to San Diego State as the Blue Demons had four errors of their own late in the set. A kill from sophomore Campbell Hauge closed the 25-16 set win for the Aztecs.
SET FOUR: Set four also opened in close fashion, with the two sides trading points, but the Blue Demons began to inch ahead with consecutive kills from Klemp and Pressly. The Aztecs would not go away, posting a 7-0 scoring run to end the final set with a 25-22 win.
