Libero rewrites record book with 1,951 digs
SAN DIEGO – DePaul volleyball defeated Tulane 3-1 (28-26, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21) Friday evening, in their second match of the San Diego State Invitational.
The highlight for the Blue Demons was libero Rachel Krasowski, who tallied 18 digs on the night to become DePaul volleyball's all-time digs leader. With 1,951 digs and counting, she breaks the record set by Susanne Fogarty in 1991. Krasowski also added 8 assists against the Green Wave.
Offensively, three Blue Demons reached double-figure kills, including graduate student Jill Pressly who notched 22 kills and nine digs. Pin hitter Audrey Klemp poured in 18 kills and five digs of her own. Senior Aly Kindelberger rounded out the top scorers of the match with 10 kills and an ace.
Freshman Amanda Saeger and senior Ashley Cudiamat each put up 24 assists, while freshman Abby Cahill contributed her first double-figure dig performance with 12 on the night.
Tulane (2-3) was led by sophomore Avery Burks, who registered 16 kills for the Green Wave.
"Gritty match. Our game was very hard to find tonight," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"Coupled with Tulane hitting some special attacks, and we found ourselves in a snake pit where both teams were challenging for momentum. In the end, for how hot they got at times during the match, our offense did tonight what it did not do last night and that was stay hot the entire four set match. The fourth set, our defense got hot and held them to 0.038 to close it out. During two sets we produced 20 kills, which is the highest we have ever had. I'm proud of this group to bend but not break."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: The Blue Demons led by as many as four early, but a 3-0 run from Tulane pulled the teams even. Kills were traded for five consecutive points, with neither side clinching the win, until kills from Kindelberger and junior Katelynn Oxley propelled DePaul to the 28-26 set victory.
SET TWO: The second set featured 16 ties, with neither team able to get far in front. Tulane went on a 3-0 run, but the Blue Demons responded with a 4-0 run of their own. At the end, three attack errors from DePaul allowed the Green Wave to clinch the set, 25-23.
SET THREE: The Blue Demons retained the lead for nearly the entire third set, with Klemp and Pressly alternating kills, until freshman Luisa Juncu took over with three kills of her own. DePaul held on to take the set 25-22, which ended with a final kill from Klemp.
SET FOUR: DePaul jumped out to a six-point lead with three early kills by Klemp and the Blue Demons never looked back. Despite three consecutive kills from the Green Wave, DePaul finished the match with a 25-21 set win.
