Pressly paces offense with 19 kills
SAN DIEGO - DePaul volleyball defeated Portland State 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 26-24) Saturday afternoon, to conclude the San Diego State Invitational with a 2-1 record. The Blue Demons move to 5-1 on the season.
Offensively, DePaul was led by 19 kills and a service ace from outside hitter Jill Pressly. Graduate student Audrey Klemp poured in eight kills of her own at a 0.467 clip. Klemp also tallied five blocks, a season-high for the pin hitter. Senior Aly Kindelberger registered seven kills along with four blocks, and junior Katelynn Oxley contributed four blocks as well.
Libero Rachel Krasowski led the defense with 14 digs, chipping in two service aces.
Setter Ashley Cudiamat contributed 28 assists and eight digs, while freshman Amanda Saeger put up 12 assists on the afternoon. Both setters have reached double-figure assists in all six matches this season.
"We talked pre-match about the importance of all of our systems fighting to be great at the same time," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"We were able to do just that for a lot of match moments and then our block showed up big time today to take their best players out of their rhythm. I'm proud of this group's showing on the west coast. They handled the environment like professionals, and we grew as a team this weekend."
The Vikings (0-6) were led by middle blocker Naomi White, who posted 11 kills on 25 attempts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE: DePaul came out strong defensively, with two early blocks, leading by as many as five points. The Vikings pulled close with a 4-0 scoring run, but kills from sophomore Yagmur Yavuz and Pressly finished the 25-19 set victory for the Blue Demons.
SET TWO: Portland State opened the set on a 3-0 run, but DePaul responded with five quick kills of their own, bringing the set even. The Blue Demons pulled away late, with kills from freshman Luisa Juncu and Oxley sealing the 25-21 set win for DePaul.
SET THREE: The two sides traded points early, but an ace from Krasowski and consecutive kills from Klemp gave DePaul a seven-point lead. Portland State clawed their way back with a 4-0 run late, but could not overcome the deficit as a Pressly kill secured the match win for the Blue Demons.
