Blue Demons tally 3-0 doubles record to cap off day one at FIU Invitational
MIAMI – DePaul began its first match of 2025 with a red-hot start on Friday, January 10 at the PayCargo Tennis Center.
Doubles action got underway at 8:00 a.m. CT with the duo of freshman Eleanor Cochran and sophomore Sasha Stula teaming up to take down Simeva/Baidaulet (FIU), 7-5. The pair improves to 3-0 since beginning play in the fall. DePaul veterans, junior Hannah Smith and senior Eva Goncharov defeated Gomez/Matthews (FAU) in a swift, 6-1 affair. The tandem of sophomore transfer Roberta Sechi and senior Eleanor Nobbs claimed a 6-3 victory, closing out an unbeaten day in doubles.
Three Blue Demons earned wins in singles competition. Nobbs put together a dominating first set, tallying a 6-0 advantage and solidified a straight-set victory with a 6-4 showing in set two.
Stula controlled the match against the Houston Cougars' Heta Nuutinen, 6-4, 6-2. The Gifu, Japan native climbed to 7-2 in singles play after the triumph.
The penultimate match on day one cultivated between Sechi and Hartel (MIZ). Sechi turned in a valiant effort, but fell in three sets, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 4-6.
DePaul ended play on a positive note with Cochran besting McLellan (MIZ) 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in a tiebraking thriller.
