Demon Doings
The Blue Demons enter Wednesday's tilt looking to extend their three-game winning streak after improving to 9-9 on the season and 4-1 in BIG EAST play with a 62-56 victory over Providence on Sunday afternoon.
Â
DePaul's quality start to conference action has been powered by consistent efforts from Jorie Allen, Taylor Johnson-Matthews and Meg Newman. The Blue Demon trio is responsible for 79-percent of DePaul's scoring through five conference games.
Â
Johnson-Matthews has increased her production and consistency upon stepping into BIG EAST play, averaging a league-best 21.8 points per game and scoring 10 or more points in her last 10 outings. She has scored 20+ points in three-consecutive games and has been named to the conference's weekly honor roll five weeks in a row. Â
Â
In her sixth season of collegiate basketball, Allen has continued to provide steadying leadership for a team with a combined 10 freshmen and sophomores. The graduate forward has finished all 18 games this season in double figure scoring. Her eight 20-point performances is second among all BIG EAST players while she has also found her way to the free throw line more than any player in the conference, averaging 7.3 attempts per game. Her 110 made free throws ranks fifth in Division I.
Â
Newman is posting a near double-double in conference play, with averaged of 10.8 points and 9.0 rebounds. She is shooting a team-best 48.9-percent from the floor in league games and her 8.1 boards per game overall is second in the BIG EAST.
Â
Despite being without their full complement of players all season due to injury, the Blue Demons have embraced the adversity and matched last season's BIG EAST win total through just five games.
Â
Villanova Notes
The Wildcats are 8-9 this season which includes a 2-3 mark in BIG EAST games. On Saturday, Villanova fell to Marquette on the road 64-59 in which the Golden Eagles outscored the visitors 21-9 in the third quarter.
Â

She has scored 10 or more points in all but one game this season and her 4.2 assists per contest ranks third in the conference. Junior forward Denae Carter has provided an inside presence for the 'Cats this season, finishing in double figures in the last four contests while also leading the team in rebounding with 6.6 boards per game.
Â
As a team, Villanova is one of the top three-point threats in the league, shooting 35-percent from distance which ranks third. The Wildcats have three players who have netted 20 or more triples this season.
Â
Denise Dillon, in her fifth season as head coach at Villanova, welcomed seven newcomers to the Main Line in the offseason.
Â
Series Stuff
