8,305 fans on hand for BIG EAST matchup
CHICAGO – Jorie Allen and Taylor Johnson-Matthews scored 19 points apiece to lead DePaul in an 84-58 setback to sixth-ranked UConn on Wednesday evening. A program record 8,305 fans were on hand to witness the BIG EAST Conference matchup at Wintrust Arena.
Despite a back-and-forth first quarter, the Blue Demons could not withstand a pair of 16-6 UConn outbursts. DePaul dropped to one game below .500 on the season (11-12) with the result, moving to 6-4 in the BIG EAST.
Allen scored 10 or more points for the 23rd-straight game this season while Johnson-Matthews finished in double figures for the 17th time.
For the fifth time in its last six outings, DePaul finished with at least twelve offensive boards, turning in 12 second chance points against the Huskies.
Kaitlyn Chen and Azzi Fudd led UConn (20-2, 11-0 BIG EAST) in scoring with 17 points apiece while the Blue Demons held Paige Bueckers to a season-low eight points on 2-10 shooting from the field.
How It Happened
The Blue Demons got on the board quickly, hitting two three pointers just one minute in to go up 6-0. After two minutes of scoreless basketball for the Blue Demons, the Huskies matched DePaul with two threes of their own to tie it up at six. What followed was a 16-6 run by UConn, with points by five different Huskies. Allen and Angelina Smith both responded by hitting two shots in the final minute to keep the Huskies lead at bay, 22-16.
For the second time, DePaul scored first to open a period in the form of a 20-footer by Allen to draw within four. Three Husky three-pointers gave way for another 16-6 run late in the second quarter. Allen halted UConn's attack, with the first half score at 40-24 in favor of the visitors.
Two made field goals by Sumer Lee and Johnson-Matthews shrunk DePaul's deficit, but UConn responded with four-straight field goals to go ahead 53-29. While the Blue Demons held the Huskies scoreless for nearly three minutes, DePaul could only muster one field goal in this time. In a quarter of scoring runs, UConn and DePaul traded 8-0 unanswered point streaks, with the Huskies ahead 65-39 heading into the final period.
Through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, five-consecutive baskets were traded between the two sides, 74-52. Charlece Ohiaeri and Haley Walker answered with a pair of three pointers, marking the second most points UConn allowed in a BIG EAST Conference game this season in a 84-58 final.
