Johnson-Matthews Nets Career-High in Loss to Seton Hall

Junior guard scores 26 points Saturday afternoon
CHICAGO – Junior guard Taylor Johnson-Matthews recorded a career-high 26-points on Saturday afternoon as DePaul fell to Seton Hall 72-55 at Wintrust Arena. After a closely contested first quarter, the visiting Pirates outscored the Blue Demons 23-13 in the second stanza and never relinquished the lead in a clash between a pair of BIG EAST foes.
DePaul (11-13, 6-5 BIG EAST) used a strong third quarter to close the gap to just five points headed into the final 10 minutes but couldn't withstand a 10-0 run from the Pirates to open the fourth.
Johnson-Matthews totaled her sixth 20-point performance of the season while shooting 53-percent from the field to lead the Blue Demons. Graduate forward Jorie Allen finished in double figures for the 24th-straight game with 10 points in addition to six assists and five rebounds.
Haley Walker added seven points and seven rebounds as the Blue Demons outrebounded the Pirates by a 43-40 margin. Meg Newman contributed 10 boards of her own for her 10th game this season with double-digit rebounds.
The Pirates scored 18 points off 18 DePaul turnovers while committing a season-low five turnovers themselves.
Faith Masonius led three Seton Hall players in double figures with 21 points to go with seven rebounds. Freshman guard Jada Eads added 18.
How It Happened
Seton Hall used a 7-0 run to jump in front early 11-4 midway through the first quarter. DePaul bounced back with an ensuing 9-2 spurt before the Pirates sank a three at the buzzer to lead 16-13 after 10 minutes.
After tallying eight first-quarter points, the Pirates' Jada Eads added four more to open the second period. A Walker layup cut the deficit to two possessions after Seton Hall moved the lead to eight. The Pirates scored 14 points in the final five minutes of the half, extending their advantage to 39-26 at the break.
Three-consecutive DePaul field goals trimmed the Seton Hall lead to seven three minutes into the third quarter. Johnson-Matthews completed a three-point play from the line, finishing the quarter with nine points as DePaul cut the deficit to five, 50-45, headed into the fourth.
Seton Hall (16-5, 8-2) opened the final period with 10 unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game, 60-45. The Blue Demons knocked down three free throws and Johnson-Matthews accounted for three field goals in the fourth quarter to end with a game-high 26 points.
