Women’s tennis begins first tournament as a team in East Lansing, Michigan
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis sets its sights on the Michigan State Classic, Friday, October 3 through Sunday, October 5 at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
The tournament marks the first time the team will play together this season. Sasha Stula was the lone DePaul participant at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic last weekend, reaching the singles quarterfinals.
Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Western Michigan join DePaul to make up the tournament field.
Doubles competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. CT with singles to follow at 1:30 p.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 4. Singles start at 9 a.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 5.
Stula and senior Hannah Smith look to replicate success from the 2024 tournament, as both players each tallied two wins in three singles matches the last time they were in East Lansing. Smith has received First Team All-BIG EAST selections in each of the last two seasons.
The Blue Demons return six of the eight players from last season's team, including redshirt sophomore Helin Alvarez, who missed the 2024 dual season due to injury. Freshman Clara Nilsson from Malmo, Sweden, and Yasemin Pehlivan from Istanbul, Turkey, will make their collegiate debuts this weekend. In juniors, Nilsson reached the singles semifinals at J30 Gothenburg in October 2024 and J60 Rungsted Kyst in October 2023. In doubles, Nilsson reached the finals seven times, most recently at the J60 Rungsted Kyst in Copenhagen, Denmark, a year ago.
Pehlivan put together a strong finish to her juniors career, notching both singles and doubles championship victories at J30 Izmir on July 20, 2025 in Turkey.
