Clagette, Flowers net goals for the Blue Demons
CHICAGO – DePaul men's soccer put together one of its most complete performances of the season in Saturday's home finale, but a late push from Providence saw the visitors escape with a 3-2 result at Wish Field. The Blue Demons (2-8-6, 0-6-1 BIG EAST) twice held the lead behind goals from Jordan Clagette and Tyler Flowers in an evenly matched contest to close out the home portion of the regular-season schedule.
The Friars (6-6-2, 4-2-1 BIG EAST) converted a pair of second-half goals to overcome the DePaul advantage and secure their fourth conference win. The Blue Demons matched Providence across the stat sheet, generating 13 shots and an 8-3 edge in corners, while graduate goalkeeper Clayton Brooks anchored a defensive group that frustrated the Friars for much of the afternoon. DePaul continued to show growth in the attacking third, creating sustained pressure and multiple scoring opportunities in the final 20 minutes.
How It Happened
The first chance of the match came in the ninth minute when a DePaul handball in the box triggered a Providence free kick, but Brooks was quick off his line to steer it away and set an early tone.
Despite Providence holding the bulk of early possession, DePaul began to find rhythm in the attacking third. In the 19th minute, Christian Baumgartner served a pinpoint cross for Daniel Hickiewicz, whose header narrowly missed over the bar.
Moments later, the Blue Demons broke through. In the 34th minute, Baumgartner once again whipped in service from the right side, finding Clagette diving at the far post for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The Friars answered late in the half, leveling the score 1-1 in the 43rd minute off a rebound inside the box.
After the halftime break, DePaul came out on the front foot. Flowers restored the advantage in the 53rd minute with a highlight-reel free kick from 25 yards out that soared into the top corner. Providence, however, would not go quietly, equalizing in the 72nd minute before converting a penalty three minutes later to pull ahead 3-2.
The Blue Demons continued to press for an equalizer, recording three late corner kicks and a pair of quality chances from Nolan McGuire and Luca Iaccino, but Providence held firm through the final whistle.
DePaul finished with a 13-12 advantage in total shots, led by Clagette's four attempts, while Brooks recorded two saves in goal.
