Tavares Salomon and Timme power DePaul with 12 kills apiece
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball snapped its three-match skid with a 3-0 sweep of Seton Hall Friday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The Blue Demons used a balanced attack and stout defensive effort to improve to 13-11 overall and 6-7 in BIG EAST play.
Freshman pin hitters Isabela Tavares Salomon and Kendall Timme led the offensive attack for DePaul with 12 kills apiece. Timme recorded double-figure kills for the 16th time this season in addition to eight digs, two service aces and two blocks. Salomon hit a season-best .476 on the night while adding three blocks.
Morgan Stewart added seven kills on 24 errorless swings while registering seven digs. Sophomore setter Amanda Saeger directed the offense with 30 assists.
DePaul notched 11 blocks as a team, holding Seton Hall to a .058 attack efficiency. Jade Dudley-Epps had a team-best six rejections while fellow middle blocker Katelynn Oxley added five blocks and five kills.
Sophomore libero Abby Cahill added double-digit digs for the seventh time in the last eight matches with 15 on the night.
"That was truly a great team performance. We battled hard in practice all week and stayed focused on the process, especially as it related to our team defense," said head coach Marie Zidek. "We had far more opportunities in transition tonight, and everyone's arm was able to go. Really cool to see the group reaching for its best team volleyball when the best volleyball is required. The atmosphere tonight was fantastic, and we fed off the crowd's energy, turning that into points."
How It Happened
Set 1: The two sides traded the first 30 points of the match, tied at 15 apiece after a Seton Hall service error. Back-to-back blocks from opposite pins pushed the Blue Demons ahead 17-15. Oxley proved persistent in the middle, converting on two critical kills in the red zone to extend the edge to 21-18. Stewart's fourth kill of the set sealed the opening win for the Blue Demons, 25-21. DePaul had five blocks in the first stanza.
Set 2: A 5-0 run with Timme behind the service line powered DePaul to an 11-4 advantage, capped by the Blue Demons' seventh block of the night courtesy of Stewart and Oxley. The Pirates cut the deficit to five behind a 3-0 run, but the Blue Demons halted the momentum with back-to-back aces from Dudley-Epps. Senior right side Grace Brooker clinched the set for the Blue Demons, powering through the block for a 25-15 second set victory. The Blue Demons hit .500 in the frame.
Set 3: Saeger found Dudley-Epps on the slide to extend DePaul's third-set lead to 7-4. A ball-handling error from the Pirates handed the Blue Demons their largest lead of the match at 20-10. Seton Hall scored three unanswered before DePaul clinched the match via Timme's 12th kill.
