Kate Novik’s Triple Double Paces DePaul in 78-48 Win Over UMass Lowell

CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball returned to the win column with a wire-to-wire 78-48 victory over UMass Lowell Thursday night at Wintrust Arena. Junior guard Kate Novik powered the win with her first career triple-double, finishing with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, the eighth triple-double in program history.
Michelle Ojo led four Blue Demons in double figures with a career-best 20 points on 69-percent shooting from the floor. The graduate guard made her first eight attempts and added seven rebounds. Sophomore Natiah Nelson contributed 14 points on 60-percent shooting and pulled down six boards. Meg Newman rounded out the quartet of double-figure scorers with 10 points and four rebounds.
As a team, DePaul (3-8, 0-2 BIG EAST) dominated the paint 48-26, matching its season high in paint points. The Blue Demons secured 18 offensive rebounds and blanked the River Hawks in second-chance points, 19-0.
DePaul also recorded 25 assists on 33 made field goals, marking its fourth game this season with 20 or more helpers.
Jaini Edmonds led UMass Lowell with 20 points.
How It Happened
Both teams struggled to find an early rhythm, combining for just four made field goals in the first five minutes. DePaul held UMass Lowell scoreless over the final 2:37 of the opening quarter to take a 15-9 lead.
Newman scored the first six points of the second period to push the margin to 21-14. The Blue Demons then closed the half on an 18-2 run, fueled by eight points each from Newman and Ojo, to take a 39-21 advantage into the locker room.
UMass Lowell (4-6) opened the third quarter hitting three of its first four attempts, but DePaul answered with an 8-0 run to build its largest lead, 53-28, with 4:45 left in the frame. The Blue Demons shot 60 percent in the quarter and carried a 68-36 lead into the fourth.
The River Hawks scored the first six points of the final stanza before Sumer Lee connected on her second basket at the 6:41 mark. Despite being outscored 12-10 in the quarter, DePaul controlled the rest of the way to secure the 78-48 win.
