DePaul Drops BIG EAST Opener to Marquette Thursday

Alayna West nets career-high 17 points in the loss
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball fell to Marquette, 85-54, Thursday night at Wintrust Arena in the BIG EAST lid-lifter. The Blue Demons struggled to settle into an offensive rhythm and were held below 60 points for the third-consecutive game.
Redshirt freshman Alayna West recorded a career-high 17 points on 62-percent shooting from the field and a 6-for-8 mark from the charity stripe. Junior guard Kate Novik finished in double figures for the seventh time in nine games with 11 points and a season-high five steals.
In a physical affair that saw the two sides combine for 45 free-throw attempts, the Blue Demons matched their season high with 21 trips to the line. DePaul's 33 bench points were the second-highest output this season.
Skylar Forbes totaled a game-high 19 points to lead Marquette.
How It Happened
Marquette (5-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) won the tipoff and started the game on a 7-0 run as the Blue Demons committed three turnovers in the first three minutes of the contest. DePaul went three minutes without a field goal before West connected from deep to break the drought. After 10 minutes, the Blue Demons trailed 23-9.
It wasn't until five minutes into the second quarter that DePaul converted from the field on a West drive to the basket. The Blue Demons scored the final two field goals of the period to trim the deficit to 17 heading into halftime.
West's fourth field goal of the game, just before the buzzer in the third, cut Marquette's lead to 62-36 with a quarter to play.
The fourth quarter was DePaul's most efficient offensively, as the Blue Demons went 7-for-13 from the field, led by Novik's three baskets in the frame. The Golden Eagles shot 72 percent in the final stanza, including a 3-for-3 mark from deep, to seal the road victory.
