Newman Records Double-Double as DePaul Falls to Providence 76-63

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Limited to just nine points in the first quarter, DePaul fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 76-63 loss to Providence on the road Thursday night. The Blue Demons fought back in the second half to come within three, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling to 11-14 overall and 6-6 in BIG EAST play.
Redshirt-junior Meg Newman posted a career-high 19 points to go with a season-best 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and third of her career. Newman shot 58-percent from the field. The Indianapolis, Ind. native eclipsed 400 rebounds for her career.
Jorie Allen finished with 19 points for her 25th-straight game in double figures this season while Taylor Johnson-Matthews added 18 points of her own to go with six rebounds and a career-best three blocks.
The Blue Demons outrebounded the Friars 40-36 and turned in 40 points in the paint to Providence's 28. DePaul grabbed 15 offensive boards and turned in 14 second chance points.
Providence (10-15, 3-9) was led by Grace Efosa who had a game-high 27 points while Olivia Olsen had a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
How it Happened
Providence opened the game on an 8-0 run before Johnson-Matthews scored DePaul's first points on a midrange jumper. Allen and Johnson-Matthews combined for the first eight points of the game as DePaul trailed 12-8 at the first media timeout. The Blue Demons were held without a point for a 4:46 stretch as the Friars took a 20-9 lead after one.
After the Friars scored nine of the first 12 points of the second quarter to take a 17-point lead, DePaul scored seven unanswered capped by a steal and score from Allen. A layup from Johnson-Matthews with seven seconds remaining cut the deficit to 41-29 at halftime.
The Blue Demons opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to force an early Providence timeout before Olsen scored the next seven points for the Friars to stretch the advantage back to double digits. Johnson-Matthews scored a pair of baskets in the final 90 seconds to trim the deficit to eight, 55-47, with 10 minutes to play.
For the second-straight period DePaul scored six unanswered to open the frame. A jumper from Newman cut the Providence lead to three with eight minutes remaining, but the Friars made 9 of their 11 free throw attempts to seal the victory.
