Goncharov clinches match point for fifth time this season
OMAHA, Neb. – The Blue Demons grounded the Bluejays in a 6-1 victory at the Hanscom Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon, improving to 9-1 all-time against Creighton.
In doubles play, senior Eleanor Nobbs and sophomore Roberta Sechi fell 6-1 on court two. No. 49 Eva Goncharov and Hannah Smith picked up their teammates, defeating the Bluejays' Bianca Rademacher and Valerie Negin, 6-2. The pair is 6-2 and on a five-match winning streak since the end of January. On court three, Eleanor Cochran and Sasha Stula dominated, taking the match, 6-2. The Blue Demons gained the doubles point in eight of eleven contests this season.
DePaul continued its momentum into singles action, collecting early points from Stula and freshman Isabella Gibson. Losing the first point in each set, Stula rebounded to beat Negin, 6-2, 6-1. Gibson dominated both sets, earning a 6-1, 6-1 sweep.
Goncharov faced Philippa Roy, tallying a quick, 6-1, 6-4 triumph on court four. The Canadian clinched match point in five Blue Demon wins thus far, and recorded a point in all six team victories.
Smith climbed back from a 5-4 deficit in each set over Rademacher, 7-5, 7-5 on court one, ending Rademacher's seven-match winning streak to begin the season.
Sechi closed out the contest in a two-hour thriller against Alem Cote in slot six. The first-year Blue Demon gained a 7-6 (2), advantage after set one. Dropping the second frame, Sechi rebounded in the winner-take-all tie-breaking set. In a back-and-forth battle, Sechi edged out Cote, 11-9, securing the sixth and final point for the Scarlet and Blue.
