
Nobbs Pushes DePaul Past Cornell

Blue Demons notch third-straight victory
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis edged Cornell, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at XS Tennis Village in a thriller.
Doubles tandem Eleanor Cochran and Sasha Stula started quickly, holding a 3-0 lead on court three. The pair never relinquished the advantage, dominating 6-1. Cochran and Stula sit atop the team with a 9-3 record during dual play this season. No. 49 Eva Goncharov and Hannah Smith dropped the opening game but rebounded to win 6-2, securing the doubles point for the Scarlet and Blue. With the victory, Goncharov and Smith move into position for a potential fourth consecutive BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week Award.
Stula paced the Blue Demons in singles action, beating Cornell's Victoria Zhao 6-1, 6-0 on court two. The Gifu, Japan native is 7-2 this season and leads the team in win percentage. Goncharov produced a stellar performance with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in slot four, moving DePaul one win away from claiming the match.
The Big Red fought back, collecting courts six and one. After falling in set one, freshman Isabella Gibson battled in the second, coming up short in a 2-6, 4-6 loss on court five.
In the winner-take-all match between Eleanor Nobbs and Sage Loudon of Cornell, Nobbs lost the first set, 4-6 in spot three. The senior gained momentum following a 6-3 win in set two. Nobbs relentlessly attacked early in the tiebreaking set, earning a 3-0 advantage. Loudon grabbed the fourth game, but Nobbs countered back, taking game five. The Bath, England native ended Cornell's comeback efforts with a 6-3 triumph in the final set, helping the Blue Demons prevail 4-3.
"I knew if I played for my teammates every single point during the last match we would win," said Nobbs after the win. "We have an amazing group, so I'm excited to see what we can achieve the rest of this season."
