Blue Demons shoot 53% from the field in ranked BIG EAST loss
CHICAGO – In a game that saw DePaul leading No. 23 Creighton for nearly all of the first half, the Blue Demons could not weather the Bluejays' potent offense in an 83-74 final score on Sunday afternoon at Wintrust Arena.
Jorie Allen and Taylor Johnson-Matthews spearheaded DePaul's offense, scoring a combined 48 points on an outstanding 18-for-25 (.720) from the field. Kate Clarke and Johnson-Matthews led the way from behind-the-arc, knocking down three triples apiece on ten total attempts.
Allen's 22-point performance marked her 15th game with at least 20 points this season and 29th-straight game in double figures. She added seven assists and four rebounds.
Redshirt-junior Meg Newman controlled the boards with a season-high 13 rebounds, her seventh double-digit performance on the boards this season. The Blue Demons outrebounded the Bluejays 33-27.
Creighton (23-4, 15-1) had four scorers in doubles figures, all shooting at least 50% from the field. Lauren Jensen netted a game-high of 28 points.
How It Happened
Allen and Johnson-Matthews opened the scoring for the Blue Demons, going a combined 5-for-6 to take an early 12-9 lead through five minutes. Finishes in the paint by Allen, Shakara McCline and Haley Walker pushed DePaul in front by five, before Kate Clarke rained in a three to close the period in front, 22-16.
Both sides struggled to get the lid off the basket, hitting a combined three field goals through five minutes of the second quarter. Clarke ended the drought on a 25-footer, with the Blue Demon defense keeping the advantage intact, 29-25. Allen halted a 7-0 Bluejays run with an and-one to knot the score at 34 apiece. Scoring picked up for both teams in the final moments of the first half with the Creighton ahead 41-38 at the break.
DePaul found success early in the second half, with Sumer Lee and Newman scoring three quick baskets down low to claw back within one. Clarke's third three pointer of the game gave the Blue Demons their first lead of the second half, 49-47. Three lead changes followed before Creighton hit on five-of-six field goals to reclaim a nine-point edge heading into the fourth quarter.
Johnson-Matthews scored five-straight points to open the final period for the Blue Demons. In its most efficient scoring stretch of the game, Creighton rattled off eight unanswered to take its largest lead of the game at 17 points. Consecutive steals and scores by Johnson-Matthews and Newman closed the gap to ten, but the Bluejays held firm to secure the 83-74 victory.
