Jorie Allen records 16th 20-points outing of the season to lead Blue Demons
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – DePaul women's basketball came out on the wrong side of a frenetic and physical affair with Seton Hall on Thursday evening, dropping a 76-67 battle inside Walsh Gymnasium.
The Blue Demons got out to a strong start and led by four after the first quarter but couldn't maintain an offensive rhythm in the second and third period as Seton Hall went +16 over that span to take control of the ballgame.
DePaul (12-18, 7-10 BIG EAST) came within a pair of possessions late in the fourth quarter on a strong effort from the free throw line but couldn't complete the comeback on the road.
Graduate forward Jorie Allen led DePaul once again with her 30th-consectuive game in double figures with a team-high 21 points on a 13-for-14 clip from the free throw line to go with six rebounds. It was Allen's 16th 20-point outing of the season, the most by any BIG EAST player.
Shooting 4-for-8 from long distance, junior guard Kate Clarke added a season-high 18 points to finish in double figures for the fifth time this season in her ninth appearance. Taylor Johnson-Matthews rounded out a trio of scorers in double figures for DePaul with 12 points.
Seton Hall (20-8, 12-5 BIG EAST) went 26-for-29 from the free throw line and won the battle of the boards 44-29.
Despite being outrebounded as a team, junior forward Meg Newman grabbed a game-high 13 boards and led the Blue Demons on the glass for the 18th time this season.
Savannah Catalon led the Pirates with a career-high 36 points while Faith Masonius and Amari Wright added 13 points apiece.
How It Happened
Johnson-Matthews won the tipoff and scored the first points of the game before Seton Hall answered with six-straight to claim a two-possession lead. The Blue Demons responded with a 9-0 run of their own over the next three minutes to jump back in front 11-7 at the media break. A three-point field goal from Clarke gave the visitors its largest lead of the game before the Pirates converted on a three-point play at the end of the period with the Blue Demons leading 16-12.
Seton Hall used a 10-0 run in a two-minute stretch to claim an eight-point advantage, 30-22, with four minutes remaining in the second quarter. Clarke's second three of the half trimmed the lead back down to four before the Pirates responded with a triple the next trip down the floor. DePaul trailed 34-29 headed into the locker room.
The Blue Demons hit five of six free throw attempts in the first 90 seconds of the half to come within two. An elbow jumper from Clarke broke a near three-minute scoring drought in which Seton Hall took a 10-point advantage. Back-to-back layups underneath for the Pirates put them on top by 12, 52-40, their largest advantage of the game with three minutes left in the stanza. Seton Hall went without a field goal for the final three minutes of the period but maintained a 56-44 lead headed into the fourth quarter.
DePaul went without a field goal for six minutes in the final period but hung around as Allen's 13th free throw of the game brought the Blue Demons within sixth, 70-64, with just over a minute remaining. The Pirates sunk six free throws on six attempts in the final minute to hold on for the victory.
