Blue Demons tally six points in winning effort
DES MOINES, Iowa – DePaul women's tennis dominated the Drake Bulldogs, 6-1, at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday night.
The win marks the third straight victory for the Blue Demons. DePaul holds a 4-2 record through its first six matches, compared to the 2-4 start that last season's team endured before finishing with a 17-8 record.
Doubles play was a back-and-forth affair. No. 1 doubles pair Hannah Smith and Eva Goncharov fell into an early 0-2 hole before digging out for a 7-5 victory over the Bulldogs' Elizabete Klavinska and Tess Caldicott. Drake did the same on court two, winning 7-5 after trailing 2-4 midway through the match.
The tiebreaker on court three pitted freshman Eleanor Cochran and sophomore Sasha Stula against Lee/Ruzic in a one-hour, 15-minute classic. After dropping the first two sets, Cochran and Stula came roaring back to take a 5-2 lead. Lee and Ruzic responded to even the match at 6-6, setting up a tiebreaker round. The Blue Demon duo won the tiebreaker, 7-4, claiming the match and securing the doubles point. The tandem is 5-1 after picking up their biggest victory of the season.
Singles began with junior Hannah Smith cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court one. Moving up to slot two, Stula continued her success with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph. Senior Eva Goncharov clinched the match in decisive fashion, 6-1, 6-3, on court four. The Canadian has clinched each of the Blue Demons' four wins this season. No. 5 singles, freshman Isabella Gibson found her footing with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Shiori Takeda. Senior Eleanor Nobbs rounded out the evening with a thrilling, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1) match, collecting the team's sixth point of the night, its most in a contest this year. Drake secured only court six during singles play.
