Blue Demons shutout in singles after securing doubles point
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Blue Demons lost 4-1 against the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City, Iowa on Sunday afternoon.
Doubles play got underway from the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex at noon CT. Iowa secured court three to open action, but DePaul would not be denied. No. 1 doubles senior Eva Goncharov and junior Hannah Smith earned a 6-4 triumph, forcing a tie-breaking match. Partners Roberta Sechi and Eleanor Nobbs battled on court two, winning 7-5 over the Hawkeyes' Hayashida and Xu to collect the doubles point and take an early lead. DePaul tallied five doubles points in its first seven matches this season.
The Hawkeyes sought revenge during singles play. Iowa's No. 113 Daianne Hayashida ended sophomore Sasha Stula's red-hot performance with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court two. In a back-and-forth affair, Smith fell 5-7, 1-6 in slot one. After losing the first set, 1-6, Nobbs rallied in the second, but ultimately came up short, 4-6. The Blue Demons were defeated on court four, closing out the match.
DePaul wrapped up the weekend 1-1 after a win over Drake on Friday. The Scarlet and Blue are set to play Purdue next weekend, the third Big Ten opponent in their first eight dual matches.
