Blue Demons Claim 80-76 Road Victory at Georgetown

Washington, D.C. – DePaul women's basketball claimed an 80-76 victory over Georgetown on the road Sunday afternoon inside McDonough Arnea. In a game that featured nine lead changes and six ties, the Blue Demons started strong and maintained their composure down the stretch to improve to 12-14 overall and 7-6 in BIG EAST play.

Graduate forward Jorie Allen led the Blue Demons with 31 points for her 26th-straight game in double figures. It was her 12th outing of 20 or more points this season. She tied the program record for made free throws in a single game with 17 on 18 attempts.

Taylor Johnson-Matthews finished with 21 points, including 14 in the second half, while grabbing nine rebounds. The junior guard recorded her seventh 20-point game of the season.

Meg Newman and Kate Clarke added nine points apiece while Newman collected six rebounds.Â

The Blue Demons sunk a season-best 29 free throws on 34 attempts while also winning the rebounding battle 46-35.

Georgetown (11-12, 4-8 BIG EAST) had four players finish in double figures led by Kelsey Ransom's 18 points. Â

How It Happened
Three different players scored the first three field goals of the game for DePaul. The Blue Demons used a 17-3 run punctuated by a pair of three-pointers from Clarke to take a 17-8 lead with two and a half minutes to play in the opening period. Georgetown answered with a 6-0 run of their own, but DePaul led 21-14 after a quarter.

The Blue Demons were held scoreless for a near seven-minute stretch in the second quarter as the Hoyas used a 12-0 run in that span to take a 39-36 advantage into halftime.

DePaul opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead, 45-39. Georgetown came within two on a successful three-point play with under a minute remaining. A pair of free-throws from Johnson-Matthews gave the Blue Demons a 59-55 edge heading into the final quarter.

A 12-2 run to begin the final period gave Georgetown its largest lead of the second half, 67-63, to force a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons strung together six-straight points to climb back in front by two before the Hoyas drained their ninth three of the game to jump back in front 74-72. Newman's finish inside with just over a minute remaining gave the Blue Demons the lead for good as Allen and Johnson-Matthews buried free throws down the stretch to claim the road victory.
