CHICAGO – Doug Bruno, Hall of Fame DePaul women's basketball coach, was recognized Wednesday by the Chicago City Council under a unanimous resolution, celebrating his decades-long impact on women's sports and the City of Chicago.
The resolution states that Mayor and members of the City Council of Chicago will "acknowledge the enduring legacy left by Coach Doug Bruno in basketball history; recognize his unwavering advocacy for women in college athletics; and commend the lifechanging impact he has had developing the character and careers of the thousands of athletes whose lives he touched."
Bruno, a Chicago native, first came to DePaul as a student-athlete on the men's basketball team in 1969 where he played for legendary coach Ray Meyer. Bruno was then named head coach of the Blue Demons women's program for the first time in 1976, before later returning to the program in 1988 where he would lead the team for nearly four decades. In his career as head coach, DePaul won 786 games, competed in 25 NCAA Tournaments, four Sweet Sixteens and won five BIG EAST Tournament titles.
He was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022, recognizing his life long dedication to the sport of women's basketball. Bruno also worked with athletes at the highest level with USA Basketball, where he helped lead the team to its fifth and sixth-straight Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016.
In addition to his work at DePaul, Bruno dedicated his life to growing the game of women's basketball through his Doug Bruno Girls Basketball Camps. He mentored over 80,000 young athletes throughout the years, many of whom have gone onto successful careers in every walk of life.
Bruno remains active in the DePaul community, currently serving as Special Assistant to the Vice President & Director of Athletics.
