Ramblers net two in second half to seal result
CHICAGO – DePaul women's soccer came up short in its crosstown clash with Loyola Chicago, falling 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field. The result evens the Blue Demons' record at 2-2 and gives the Ramblers their third-straight win in Lincoln Park.
Despite carrying 57 percent of possession in the first half and trading chances throughout, DePaul could not find the breakthrough. Loyola struck twice in the span of five minutes early in the second half, and the Blue Demons were unable to convert on their late pushes to level the score.
"Our preparation was the same as it has been," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "We know Loyola is a huge rival, and our team was mentally prepared for that. They knew what the game was going to look like, and we prepared them for a physical battle. The highs and lows of sports are a reality; you can't get too high and you can't get too low. Our group is still learning how to manage those emotions. Playing Thursday to Sunday is tough, and you have to be locked in right from the whistle."
How It Happened
Both sides traded possession in the early going. Loyola held a 5-3 shot edge in the first half, with goalkeeper Mason Hillery making two saves on Molly Pistorius in the 7th minute and Zoe Hevey in the 13th. DePaul's best looks came later in the half from Mia Veldman in the 38th and Danielle Fjeldsted in the 44th, though none found the frame. The Ramblers nearly struck in the 42nd when Emily Rossi fired wide.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 54th minute when Maggie Schmidt found the net, then doubled the lead five minutes later with a second tally inside the box. Hillery added key stops throughout the half, including saves on Hevey and Jadyn Harris to keep DePaul within reach.
The Blue Demons nearly pulled one back in the 59th minute as Marin Stamper broke free on a counter with only one defender to beat, but her attempt to connect with a teammate was cut off.
DePaul's best stretch came in the final twenty minutes. Forward Sienna Gonzales twice forced saves from Rambler goalkeeper Allison Deardorff in the 68th and 79th minutes. Grace Menser saw her shot blocked in the 74th, and Tessa Fagerson sent an effort high a minute later. Despite the late pressure, the Blue Demons could not find the breakthrough as Loyola held on for the 2-0 result.
