DePaul wins home opener for fourth time in eight years
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball defeated Central Arkansas 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-18) in its home-opening match, improving to 4-3 on the season. The Sugar Bears fall to 2-6.
The middle blockers excelled for the Blue Demons, as Meghan Scholz logged nine kills at a .571 clip, along with a pair of blocks. Katelynn Oxley added ten kills herself on .500 hitting, while Jade-Dudley Epps posted eight kills and a team-best six blocks.
Morgan Stewart paced the DePaul offense with 12 kills, also registering 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Fellow freshman Eva Hurrle led the defense with 25 digs.
"Nice team effort today to limit the Central Arkansas offense," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"This team grows a lot match to match and week to week so we are excited to see how we can grow tomorrow as a group."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE:
The teams traded points throughout the first half of the opening set, until two service aces from Dudley-Epps gave DePaul a narrow three-point advantage into the media timeout. The Sugar Bears pulled within one point late, but a 5-0 run won the set for the Blue Demons, 25-19.
SET TWO:
Two quick kills from Dudley-Epps and Kendall Timme gave DePaul an early advantage, but a pair of Blue Demon errors allowed the Sugar Bears to take a 7-5 lead. From there, DePaul exploded for a 9-0 scoring run, taking 12 of the next 14 points to amass a lead that they did not relinquish the rest of the set. A kill from Meghan Scholz secured the second frame for DePaul, 25-16.
SET THREE:
A strong stint at the service line from Dudley-Epps propelled the Blue Demons to a 5-0 scoring run early, with Oxley, Scholz and Stewart each adding three more kills to seal the final set, 25-18, in favor of the Blue Demons.
