Blue Demons defeat Cougars in straight sets
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball defeated Chicago State, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-13) on Sunday afternoon, extending its win streak to three matches and improving to 5-3 on the year.
Five Blue Demons contributed at least five kills, led by Morgan Stewart with 11, and followed closely behind by middle blocker Katelynn Oxley, who added nine. Jade Dudley-Epps, Martina Diana and Meghan Scholz registered six kills apiece.
For the second consecutive match, Amanda Saeger organized the DePaul offense, adding 37 assists. Libero Eva Hurrle paced the defensive effort, notching 14 digs.
"This weekend was critical for our growth as a team," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"First, we have to hold quality performance two days in a row. Second, we have to be a team that can hold game with everyone. Our team did a much better job of playing with everyone today against a solid serving and blocking team in Chicago State."
Nayella George and Jocelyn Carter topped the Cougars, each with six kills.
SET ONE
An ace from Diana started the Blue Demons on the right foot, but the Cougars earned the next three points to take the lead. Four different Blue Demons tallied points in a 4-0 run, and they retained the edge for the rest of the set, taking the victory 25-19, with Diana, Dudley-Epps, Oxley, Stewart and Scholz all contributing kills.
SET TWO
A kill and two service aces from Dudley-Epps earned the Blue Demons a quick 3-0 advantage, and two more kills from Oxley jump started another run, giving DePaul an 8-1 lead. Four errors from the home team allowed the Cougars to knot the frame at 15 points apiece, but the Blue Demons pulled away, winning the set 25-17, behind four kills from Stewart and a pair of service aces from Diana.
SET THREE
The final set proved to be the strongest for DePaul, as they earned eight of the first ten points behind two kills each from Luisa Juncu and Oxley. Two more 5-0 runs for the Blue Demons, including two aces from Hurrle, put the set out of reach for the Cougars, and DePaul won the set, 25-13.
