Stula Reaches Singles Quarterfinals at Milwaukee Tennis Classic

Stula tallies three total victories across singles and doubles over the weekend

MILWAUKEE – Sasha Stula represented DePaul at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, reaching the singles quarterfinals on Saturday.

The tournament began with doubles competition on Thursday, September 25, at 11 a.m. CT from the Western Racquet Club in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. Stula partnered with Ashley Matz of Florida Gulf Coast, defeating Polina Khotko/Sienna Osborne (Western Michigan), 7-6 (2), in the opening round. The round of 16 followed, but the pair fell to Brooklyn Olson/Alice Soulie (Ole Miss), 6-4.

In singles, Stula received a bye in the opening round of 64, and took the court against Carla Muro Castellvi (Arkansas State) on Friday, Sept. 26. In a back-and-forth affair, Muro Castellvi won the first set, 6-4. Stula battled back in the second after securing a 7-5 victory to set up a decisive tiebreaker. Stula jumped out to an early lead and won the final set 10-5 to claim the match.

Stula faced Sarah Shahbaz of Ball State, Friday afternoon in the round of 16. The junior controlled the match, beating Shahbaz, 6-4, 6-4. The victory set up a quarterfinal match versus Maya Bordereau (Wisconsin). Stula moved ahead after the first set with a 7-6 (5) win. Bordereau bounced back, however, taking the second set 6-0. Stula could not replicate the same performance in the tiebreaker as she had the day before, dropping the game 10-4 and losing the contest.

DePaul travels to East Lansing, Michigan, for the Michigan State Tennis Classic from October 3-5. The tournament will be the Blue Demons' first action together as a team this season.
