Kendall Timme leads team with 14 kills
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball (9-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) defeated Providence 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) on Saturday evening, to remain perfect at home on the year and improve to 2-0 in BIG EAST play. The Friars fall to 9-6 overall, including 0-2 in conference matches.
"Great match for the team to receive confirmation of what we have been practicing since day one, that we are stronger as a team than we are as individuals," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"We had impactful performances from players coming off the bench to change the tune in all three sets. A great example of bend but never break, and in reaching for the strength of the group above all else. I'm really proud of this group and the weekend we put together."
For the third consecutive match Kendall Timme paced the DePaul offense, adding 14 kills on .314 hitting. The freshman also notched 13 digs, earning her third career double double.
Senior Katelynn Oxley achieved double-digit kills for the fifth consecutive match, logging ten kills at a .444 clip, the most efficient hitter for the Blue Demons. Fellow middle blocker Jade-Dudley Epps followed closely behind with eight kills of her own.
Setter Amanda Saeger recorded 34 assists on the day, while libero Eva Hurrle anchored DePaul's defensive efforts with 17 digs.
The Friars were led by ten kills from Sophia Adkins.
SET ONE
The Blue Demons built an early lead, 17-10, with three kills each from Dudley-Epps and Timme. Following a timeout from the Friars, they rebounded behind a pair of kills from Lyric Berry and Adkins, pulling within one late, at 23-22. A kill from Oxley and bad set from Adkins earned DePaul the frame, 25-23.
SET TWO
Set two proved to be much closer throughout, until the Blue Demons earned an 8-0 scoring run, propelled by stout service from Ryan Gorski, kills from Luisa Juncu and Oxley and three Providence attack errors. A Meghan Scholz kill sealed the set, 25-20, in favor of DePaul.
SET THREE
A pair of 4-0 runs from the Friars allowed them to carve out an early edge, which was extended to five points by a service ace from Miller McDonald. Just when Providence had pulled ahead, a pair of service aces from Juncu jump started a 7-0 DePaul run, which also included a pivotal block from Oxley and Scholz. DePaul did not look back, with a pair of Timme kills starting another 4-0 run late. It was a block from Oxley and Saeger that won DePaul the final frame, 25-19.
