Baumgartner, Hernandez tally goals in Red Line Rivalry win
CHICAGO – A pair of first half goals lifted DePaul to a 2-1 win over Loyola Chicago on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field. With the victory, the Blue Demons remain unbeaten on the 2025 season at 2-0-4 and handed the Ramblers their first loss of the season.
Redshirt-junior Christian Baumgartner opened the scoring on a second-chance effort in the 17th minute to give DePaul the early lead before Noeh Hernandez added on four minutes later with a great finish on a counterattack to widen the lead to 2-0.
Loyola (1-1-3) responded with a goal of their own 15 minutes into the second half, but the Blue Demons put a halt to any more chances to hold onto the coveted victory in the Red Line Rivalry.
DePaul held a narrow 13 -11 edge in shots including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
In net, Santiago Davila matched his season-high with four saves.
How It Happened
Loyola had a flurry of chances in the first 10 minutes of the match including the game's first corner, but the Blue Demons staved off the early threat.
A DePaul throw in sparked the first goal of the match with Nolan McGuire entering the ball for Joon Han's initial blocked shot before Baumgartner cleaned up with a finish to the top left corner of the goal to provide the early advantage.
It wasn't long until Callum Watts won a duel in the midfield for Jayden Waski to drive down the field and slip the ball through for Hernandez to put it away and double the Blue Demons lead in the 22nd minute.
Neither side had many quality chances for the remainder of the half with DePaul maintaining a 2-0 edge at the intermission. The Blue Demons fired seven shots in the first 45 minutes compared to Loyola's six.
Out of the break, Loyola was aggressive with three of the first four shots in the stanza including one that found the back of the net thanks to freshman Antonio Pinto who got on the end of a cross from Arved von Vegesack.
Hernandez had another quality look on frame in the 73rd minute with a clear path to goal but the Ramblers' keeper steered it away to keep it a one-goal game.
In search of an insurance goal, the Blue Demons pressed on, with Daniel Hickiewicz and Keagan pace each putting shots on goal in the final 10 minutes.
Loyola had one last chance to equalize with a free kick just outside the box, but Hugo Urdiales struck the ball right into the hands of DePaul's Davila.
