Blue Demons use complete team performance to pick up first win over Bluejays since 2022
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball started fast and closed strong in a 76–61 victory over Creighton Sunday afternoon at Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons found an early offensive rhythm, posting their most points in a first half against a conference opponent this season, and didn't let a Creighton third-quarter run deter them en route to their first win over the Bluejays in the last eight meetings between the two teams.
Junior guard Kate Novik led the Blue Demons in scoring for the ninth time this season, finishing with 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds, five assists and a season-high five steals. Devin Hagemann erupted for a season-best 16 points, knocking down 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, while adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Sophomore forward Natiah Nelson rounded out DePaul's double-figure scorers with 10 points on 83 percent shooting from the field.
DePaul (5–17, 2–9 BIG EAST) outrebounded Creighton 42–35 and turned 16 Bluejay turnovers into 22 points. The Blue Demons finished with 19 assists, marking their ninth game this season with 18 or more helpers.
Creighton (8–12, 4–7 BIG EAST) had four players finish in double figures led by Freshman guard Ava Zediker's 19 points. Graduate forward Grace Bofelli added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
How It Happened
The Blue Demons hit six of their first eight field goals to take a 13–6 lead midway through the first quarter. The sides traded baskets over the final four minutes of the period, with Michelle Ojo having the final say by laying in a bucket as time expired to give DePaul a 23–18 lead after one. Novik led the way with nine first-quarter points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.
DePaul extended its advantage to 10 points, 32–22, early in the second quarter to force a Creighton timeout. Novik's fourth steal of the half led to a McCline layup in transition, pushing the Blue Demons' lead to 44–31 at the break.
Creighton opened the third on a 12–4 run to pull within five midway through the quarter. The Blue Demons responded with five unanswered points on a single trip down the floor, highlighted by buckets from Novik and Hagemann. The Bluejays were then held scoreless for three-and-a-half minutes as DePaul rebuilt its lead to 13. Creighton answered with a 9–0 run of its own to cut the deficit to 58–54 heading into the fourth quarter.
DePaul used a 10–2 start to the fourth quarter to put the game away. The Bluejays were held to 3-of-15 shooting from the field in the period, while the Blue Demons held a 17–8 rebounding advantage in the final 10 minutes.
