Ally Timm explodes for 21 points in setback
MILWAUKEE – Trailing by as many as 22 in the first half, DePaul women's basketball put its resilience on full display, outscoring Marquette 46-25 in the second half before eventually falling 74-73 in a battle of longtime foes Wednesday night at the Al McGuire Center.
Redshirt-freshman Ally Timm had 18 of her 21 points in the second half to ignite the second-half surge. The Menomonee Falls, Wis. native finished in double figures for the seventh time this season and fourth time in the last five games behind a 6-for-11 performance from behind the arc.
Fellow Wisconsin native Alayna West eclipsed a career-high with 19 points for her sixth game scoring double-figures this season. Junior guard Kate Novik added 16 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
The Blue Demons forced Marquette into a season-high 24 turnovers, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and scored 23 points of the miscues. DePaul's 16 steals on the outing was the most takeaways in a BIG EAST game this season.
DePaul (5-18, 2-10 BIG EAST) turned the ball over a season-low six times, the fewest in a game since March 5, 2022.
Marquette (14-7, 8-4 BIG EAST) outscored DePaul 52-36 in the paint and had four players finish in double figures led by Halle Vice's 18-point, 14-rebound double-double.
How it Happened
Marquette made six of its first eight attempts to take a 13–9 edge halfway through the opening quarter. The Blue Demons were limited to just two field goals over the final 5:30 of the period as the Golden Eagles shot 70 percent in the stanza, taking a 26–15 lead after 10 minutes.
A DePaul scoring drought of nearly three minutes allowed Marquette to go on a 13–2 run, pushing the Golden Eagles' lead to 44–22, its largest of the half. Marquette's hot shooting continued into the second quarter, connecting at a 64 percent clip to take a 49–27 advantage at the break.
A 12–2 run brought DePaul within striking distance at 55–43 before back-to-back triples from Timm made it a 10-point game, 59–49, with just over a minute remaining in the stanza. Marquette carried a 61–49 lead into the fourth quarter, despite DePaul outscoring the Golden Eagles 22–12 in the period.
The Blue Demons used an 11–0 run, capped by back-to-back threes from Timm, to cut the deficit to five, 65–60, and force a Marquette timeout at the 6:33 mark of the fourth quarter. A reverse layup from West with 1:47 remaining made it a one-possession game before the Golden Eagles stretched the lead back to five at the free-throw line. Timm's three at the buzzer wasn't enough as DePaul fell 74–73.
