Blue Demons outshoot Red Storm 12-5 in second half
CHICAGO – DePaul outshot St. John's 12-5 in the second half but could not find a breakthrough, as the Blue Demons and Red Storm played to a 0-0 draw in BIG EAST action Friday afternoon at Wish Field.
DePaul goalkeeper Chance Johnson made five saves to post his first clean sheet of the season for DePaul (3-3-5, 1-1-2 BIG EAST), including four in a first half dominated by the visitors.
How It Happened
DePaul had the first quality look of the afternoon in the third minute when Mason Kutch's header from close range sailed just over the crossbar.
St. John's (5-5-2, 1-1-2 BIG EAST) settled in from there, and Johnson was called on to turn away a Luca Fargnoli attempt in the 18th minute. The Blue Demons countered quickly, with Kutch playing the ball across to a streaking Keagan Pace down the left side. Pace fired from 15 yards out into the outstretched arms of Red Storm goalkeeper Nico Bezama.
Johnson made three more stops over the next 10 minutes, and the DePaul back line held firm through a pair of late St. John's chances to keep the match scoreless at the break. The visitors held an 8-2 edge in shots over the opening 45 minutes.
The Blue Demons came out on the front foot in the second half. Daniel Hickiewicz forced a save from Bezama in the 56th minute, and Noeh Hernandez sent a free kick from 25 yards out over the bar in the 65th.
DePaul created a flurry of chances in the 68th minute. Bezama got a hand to an open look from Liam Mullins, and Hernandez's attempt on the rebound was blocked out for a Blue Demon corner. Hernandez had another try blocked a minute later.
The pressure continued in the final third in the 74th minute, when Scott Godden's first attempt rang off the post before his follow-up was blocked.
Minutes after coming off the bench, Sam Tinoco found space in the six-yard box in the 81st minute but sent his shot over the crossbar.
Johnson preserved the draw in the 86th minute with a save on Aron Wilhelmsen, and Hernandez's final chance in the 88th minute went just wide.
