Blue Demons sweep Creighton for first time as BIG EAST foes
OMAHA, NEB. – DePaul men's basketball won a classic BIG EAST showdown Wednesday evening, 72-71, on the road at Creighton. The Blue Demons went 10-of-20 from three-point range, including six second-half threes.
Brandon Maclin posted a season-high 21 points - 19 of which fueled the Blue Demon's second half comeback. Maclin shot 8-of-12 from the floor and a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. He added four assists and three rebounds.
NJ Benson continued his strong play with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and nine rebounds. CJ Gunn rounded out DePaul's double-digit scorers with 11 points off the bench, along with three rebounds and a pair of steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Creighton (14-15, 8-10 BIG EAST) came out strong to open the game on a 19-8 lead. Gunn, Théo Pierre-Justin and Layden Blocker knocked down late three-pointers to trim the deficit to 35-30, but the Bluejays took a 38-30 lead into halftime.
In the opening minutes of the second half, DePaul (15-13, 7-10 BIG EAST) used a 10-2 run — fueled by a pair of Maclin three-pointers — to cut Creighton's lead to 43-40 before the first media timeout.
Still trailing 56-49, Pierre-Justin knocked down his second three-pointer before freshman Kruz McClure converted at the rim on a scoop and score. Kaleb Banks followed with a pair of free throws, tying the game at 56. Creighton answered with eight straight points and a 62-56 lead.
The Bluejays held a 66-63 advantage with three minutes remaining, but DePaul responded down the stretch – making six of its final eight field goal attempts. Benson finished at the rim with 32 seconds left to give DePaul a 72-71 lead. The Blue Demons held Creighton without a basket in the final seconds for the road victory.
