DePaul earns multiple medals on opening day at Gately Indoor
CHICAGO – Sade Miller and Aubrey Phillips headlined a strong opening day for DePaul track and field at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Friday at Gately Indoor, as the Blue Demons collected multiple medals and program milestones on their home track.
Miller delivered one of the most electric performances of the meet, resetting the DePaul school records in both the 60m and 200m during preliminary action. The sophomore sprint standout clocked a blistering 7.38 to lead the 60m field before doubling back with a 23.46 in the 200m, tying teammate Claire Dunn for the fastest qualifying time and positioning both Blue Demons atop the event heading into Saturday's finals.
A historic performance came in the pentathlon from Phillips, who rewrote the DePaul record book with a program-record score. The senior highlighted her day with a victory in the shot put at 11.61m and a runner-up clearance of 1.64m in the high jump while scoring across all five events to secure the new standard.
On the men's side, Demetrius Rolle matched his personal best with a 6.69 in the 60m prelims, breaking the BIG EAST Indoor Championships meet record while leading the qualifying field into Saturday's final. The Blue Demons continued to stack qualifying marks in the sprints, with Daniel Fasasi (47.07), Denhm Holt (47.63), and Tyce Smith (48.03) advancing in the 400m, while Christian Ortiz-Velazquez (21.16) and Smith (21.40) secured top-three qualifying marks in the 200m.
DePaul also found success in the field and relay events, earning multiple podium finishes. Jaiah Hopf captured silver in the long jump with a 6.14m effort, while Jaiden Gary added a bronze medal in the weight throw at 17.52m. Katelyn Welsh continued her dominance in the pole vault, matching her own school record with a 3.75m clearance to claim the silver medal.
The Blue Demons' distance medley relay squad of Kalina Urbaniak, Kayliah Motes, Lauren Pacsi and Isabella Orozco added another medal to the tally, finishing third in 11:30.29 to round out a day defined by records, medals and momentum heading into the final day of competition.
Through the first day of competition, six women's events and five men's events have been finalized, helping shape the early team standings. The DePaul women sit second overall with 35 points, trailing only UConn's 88-point total, while Villanova holds third with 31 points. On the men's side, the Blue Demons currently rank sixth with 13 points, as UConn leads the field with 57 points followed by Butler (35) and Villanova (26). With the majority of track finals still to come on Saturday, DePaul remains well positioned to add to its point total across both squads.
