Women’s tennis posts 5-2 victory at XS Tennis Village

CHICAGO – A talented and previously unbeaten Toledo team came into the Windy City and left with its first loss of the season, as DePaul women's tennis earned a 5-2 victory Friday afternoon at XS Tennis Village. Five of the six singles matches went to either a tiebreak or a third set, showcasing the Blue Demons' resilience and resolve.

DePaul set the tone in doubles, with Clara Nilsson and Hannah Smith cruising to a 6-2 win on the No. 1 court. The Blue Demons' No. 3 pairing of Helin Alvarez and Roberta Sechi followed with an identical 6-2 triumph to clinch the opening point.

With a 1-0 lead, DePaul carried its momentum into singles. On court No. 4, Yasemin Pehlivan collected a straight-sets victory, and Smith followed on court No. 2 with another two-set win. Both rallied from second-set deficits, Pehlivan from 1-4 and Smith from 5-6, to close out their matches.

Alvarez was next to finish, dropping a tight battle 1-6, 6-7 (8) after a hard-fought second set that went to a tiebreak. With DePaul leading 3-1 and all three remaining matches in third sets, junior Sasha Stula stepped up on the No. 1 court to deliver the clinching point, grinding out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win.

Nilsson kept the pressure on even with the team result decided, closing out her match 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. In the final match to finish, Sechi fell in a three-set battle, 6-4, 3-6, 1-6.
