Sechi and Pehlivan spark surge as Blue Demons survive Hoyas

CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis kept up its hot streak in the BIG EAST, coming out on top against a stout Georgetown squad, 4–3, in an evening bout of conference foes. The final point came down to the Blue Demons' top two courts, with Sasha Stula delivering the decisive blow.

The doubles portion was more of the usual for DePaul this season, with Clara Nilsson and Hannah Smith taking down their No. 1 court matchup, 6–3. Stula and Yasemin Pehlivan also quickly defeated their opponents, 6–1. Roberta Sechi and Helin Alvarez did not finish their matchup, which stood at 3–3 when it was abandoned.

Singles proved challenging for DePaul, with Nilsson going down swiftly, 0–6, 2–6, and Alvarez falling 4–6, 3–6. Facing a 2–1 deficit, the Blue Demons needed a response, and Sechi delivered with a strong showing, prevailing 6–1, 6–4. Not long thereafter, Pehlivan restored the DePaul lead in the match with a 7–5, 6–2 win. Now up 3–2, the Blue Demons needed only one more victory from either Stula or Smith to secure the team win.

Stula came through in a gritty, come-from-behind battle on the No. 1 court, shaking off a tough opening set to secure a 2–6, 7–5, 6–2 victory. Smith then wrapped up the evening with a narrow 7–5, 6–7(5), 10–5 defeat, capping a hard-fought 4–3 team win for the Blue Demons.
