DePaul picks up first road series victory of the season
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – DePaul softball took care of business on the road Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader against Seton Hall at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field to secure its first road series victory of the season. The Blue Demons received contributions up and down the lineup, earning a 5-4 victory in game one before blanking the Pirates 6-0 in game two.
Jolie Adams continued her hot offensive streak, batting .428 on the day and driving in a pair of runs, including her first collegiate home run in game two. Fellow outfielder Morgan Rogers added two hits, including her team-leading 12th double of the season, along with two RBIs in game one. Freshman Emersyn Coulter went 4-for-7 across the two games with a pair of extra-base hits while scoring twice, and sophomore catcher Zoe Levine totaled three hits and two RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Chelsea Parker delivered a key three-run home run in game two, marking her team-best 11th long ball of the season.
In the circle, sophomore right-hander Hannah Messer got the start in game one and went 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Bella Nigey entered in the third and went the distance to secure the win. The senior surrendered just one run on two hits while facing 21 batters, improving to 4-6 on the year.
Kelly Greene picked up the complete-game win in game two, tossing DePaul's first shutout of the season and allowing just four hits over seven innings.
How It Happened
Game 1: DePaul 5, Seton Hall 4
After leaving runs on the board in the first inning, the Blue Demons took advantage in the third. The first two batters reached as Katie Borges singled up the middle and Alexis Houge reached on an error before Rogers brought them home with a double up the middle to make it a 2-0 ballgame. Adams extended DePaul's lead in the next at-bat, using an infield single to plate Rogers.
The Pirates responded in the home half, putting up three runs on three hits and a Blue Demon fielding error to tie the game. Nigey entered in relief and secured three outs to end the inning, leaving two stranded.
Both sides were without a hit in the fourth and fifth innings, but that changed in the top of the sixth as the Blue Demons opened the frame with back-to-back base hits from Emersyn Coulter and Zoe Levine. DePaul loaded the bases after Bibianna Rodriguez reached on an infield error. Pinch hitter Camryn Eckhart lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Coulter and give DePaul the lead back. A second Pirates error in the frame allowed Rogers to reach and push the lead to 5-3. The Blue Demons left the bases loaded in the inning.
Seton Hall (18-25, 6-15) looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh, recording two hits and pushing a run across before Nigey secured the final out to earn the victory.
Game 2: DePaul 6, Seton Hall 0
The Blue Demons got on the board early as Adams hit her first collegiate home run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
DePaul (17-25, 6-12 BIG EAST) added on in the fifth as Coulter led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Levine to make it 2-0. The Blue Demons broke it open in the sixth, with Houge and Adams reaching on base hits to set the table for Parker's 11th home run of the season.
DePaul added one more before the inning ended to make it 6-0, as Messer drew a walk and later scored following a Coulter double and a Levine fielder's choice.
Greene worked around a one-out single and a walk in the bottom of the seventh to secure the complete-game shutout and clinch the series for DePaul.
