Graduate student closes historic career at Hayward Field
EUGENE, Ore. – After rewriting the DePaul record book throughout the outdoor season, graduate student Alex Bernstein is set to close his career on collegiate track and field's biggest stage when he competes at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Wednesday, June 9 at Hayward Field.
Fans can follow the action live on ESPN+ as Bernstein takes the ring at 4:30 p.m. CT and will open the second flight of the men's hammer throw competition. The 24-member field will receive three preliminary attempts, with the top nine competitors advancing to a three-throw final. The top eight finishers will earn First Team All-America honors, while places nine through 16 will receive Second Team All-America recognition.
Bernstein enters the national meet following one of the most dominant seasons produced by a DePaul track and field student-athlete. The Penwortham, Preston, England native qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second-straight year after placing fifth at the NCAA West First Rounds with a throw of 70.81m, earning one of 12 national qualifying spots in the men's hammer throw.
Consistency at an elite level has defined Bernstein's 2026 campaign. The graduate student spent the entire outdoor season ranked among the nation's top hammer throwers, becoming the first Blue Demon to eclipse 70m and doing so five times. After breaking a 24-year-old school record with a throw of 70.62m at the South Florida Invitational on April 10, Bernstein raised the mark twice more, eventually pushing the program record to 71.84m at the Illini Tune-Up on May 8.
Bernstein's remarkable season also included his fifth career BIG EAST title and third outdoor conference championship in the hammer throw. Along the way, he earned five BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors this spring, bringing his career total to 11 weekly conference awards. A year ago, Bernstein became the first DePaul hammer thrower in over two decades to compete at the NCAA Championships, finishing 18th nationally. This week, he returns to Hayward Field with his sights set on becoming just the second hammer throw All-American in program history.
