Blue Demons Move to 2-0 to Open the Season

CJ Gunn closes out game with career-high 28 points
CHICAGO – CJ Gunn had a career-night Friday evening at Wintrust Arena as he helped lead DePaul men's basketball to a 72-64 victory over Stonehill. The Blue Demons move to 2-0 for the 67th time in program history. Gunn tallied 28 points with six rebounds, four assists and three steals, boosted by 10 made free throws.
In addition to Gunn's outing, NJ Benson tallied his second-straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in addition to a career-high six rebounds. Benson's outing marks the first pair of double-doubles to open the season by a Blue Demon since Mac Koshal in 2009.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill (1-1) opened the second half with a run behind the performance of Hermann Koffi, tying the game at 49-49 with nine minutes remaining. The teams entered a back-and-forth affair until Gunn fired off nine unanswered points for a five-point, 60-55, DePaul lead. With the Blue Demons up by four, NJ Benson made a one-handed dunk on a pass from Layden Blocker that helped close out the game. Some consistent free throw shooting down the stretch for DePaul by Gunn, Brandon Maclin and RJ Smith helped starve off the Skyhawks.

- He also made a career-high 10 free throws on 12 attempts.
- Jeremy Lorenz tied a personal-best two steals as part of DePaul's 10 as a team.
- The Blue Demons committed only seven turnovers while forcing 16 from Stonehill.
- DePaul also attempted more than 30 free throws for the second-straight game, the first occurrence since 2021.
