Blue Demons Fall At Saint Louis

In the first of two Conference USA games on the road this weekend, the DePaul Blue Demons lost, 68-54, at Saint Louis on Friday night. With the loss, the Blue Demons dropped to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in league play while the Billikens improved to 12-6 and 3-4. DePaul trailed by just two points at halftime, but were outscored 33-21 in the final 20 minutes.
The Blue Demons started quickly building a 19-11 margin with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half. However, Saint Louis came back and went ahead, 29-27, on a three-pointer with 3:50 left until halftime. The Billikens went up by six, but DePaul used a pair of free throws and a jumper by Jamie Smith to close the gap to two points at the intermission.
The second half was all Saint Louis as they opened the stanza with a 17-6 run to build a 52-37 advantage. The Blue Demons started the half by missing 18 of their first 19 field goal attempts. The lead grew to as much as 19 points at 65-46 four minutes left in the game. As a team, DePaul was 7-for-33 from the field in the second half.
Lenae Williams lead the Blue Demons with 17 points while Briana Fitzgerald added 12 and five rebounds. Smith finished the game with a team-high seven rebounds to go with eight points. Saint Louis' Christan Shelton led all scorers with 20 points.
Next stop on the road trip for DePaul will be Charlotte on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Demons and 49ers tipoff at 2 p.m. EST in Charlotte. Next weekend, DePaul hosts Southern Miss on Friday night and Tulane on Sunday. The Tulane contest will be broadcasted nationally on ESPN2 from the DePaul Athletic Center.
