COLUMBIA, MO. (Feb. 17) - Tatum Allen smacked a homerun and Sarah Martz threw her first collegiate shutout to beat Missouri 4-0 in the Blue Demons' season opener.
No. 10 DePaul (1-0) combined for 11 hits in its first game of the Missouri Round Robin Tournament. Allen, a senior, tallied two of those hits including the biggest blow of the game. Martz went the scattering seven hits with no walks against the Tigers (2-5).
"For our first time out I thought we played great," said head coach Eugene Lenti. "We swung the bats real well and Sarah gave up seven hits, but never two in the same inning, so she never got hurt. Plus she didn't walk anybody and they walked us four times."
Martz added three hits at the plate while a pair of upperclassmen started quickly as well. Senior Dana Jakusz had two hits and junior Shavaughne Desecki picked up a triple to help pace the Blue Demon attack.
DePaul plays Northern Illinois later Saturday evening at 8 p.m. and then will play Western Illinois at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. Both scores will be updated early tomorrow afternoon. If the Blue Demons win both, they will play at 4 p.m. for the round robin championship.
