ST. LOUIS (Mar. 31) - A pair of wins over Conference USA foe Saint Louis allowed the Blue Demon softball team to extend its season high winning streak to nine games. DePaul also improved its C-USA regular season win streak to 19 games. DePaul won 9-0 and 16-1 both in five innings.
Big innings were the special of the day with DePaul producing three, six and 13 run innings in the double header. The biggest blow of the day came in the second game when Shavaughne Desecki blasted a grand slam over the right centerfield wall. Her homerun was part of a 13 run third inning in game two that saw 16 Blue Demons take a turn at bat.
In the past nine games Desecki has driven in 15 runs-she had just six RBI in the team's previous 22 games.
Sarah Martz recorded the win in the first game with her seventh shutout of the season. She also went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. She followed that performance with a double and triple in her first two at bats in game two. For the day she was 4-for-7 with five runs scored and three extra base hits. The games were her 10th and 11th multi-hit games of the season.
Lindsay Chouinard narrowly missed a no-hitter in game two when she carried the streak into the fifth inning. Jessica Saucedo broke up the bid with a single to centerfield. Chouinard finished the game throwing five innings and striking out 11 of the 18 batters she faced.
Other highlights for the Blue Demons were a pair of two run singles in game one that helped push DePaul to the eight run mercy limit. With one out in the third and the bases loaded, Tatum Allen laced a single into left field bringing home two. She was quickly followed by Liz Bouck's two run single through the middle of the infield. Bouck, who relies heavily on slap hitting, delivered one of her rare "traditional" base hits to drive in the runs.
DePaul moves its record to 23-7-1 (5-0 C-USA) with the victories and Saint Louis falls below .500 for the first time this year dropping to 15-16 (1-4 C-USA). The schools will meet in the final game of the three game set Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
