CHICAGO--DePaul freshman Sarah Martz was named Second Team All-American as a utility player by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
This marks the third time in as many years that DePaul has had a freshman named to the All-America team. Shavaughne Desecki was a second team pick at designated player in 1999 and Lindsay Chouinard was a third team selection as a utility player in 2000.
The award caps a monumental inaugural season for Martz. She had already been named Conference USA "Player of the Year" and "Freshman of the Year" in addition to earning first team All-Mideast Region honors.
Martz was a cornerstone of a DePaul team that finished its season 51-16-1. The 51 victories are second most in the program's 25-year history. Martz was able to help the team with her bat and her arm. At the plate, she led the squad in batting average, hits, triples and on base percentage, and was second in runs, slugging percentage and stolen bases. In the pitcher's circle, Martz led the team in wins, ERA and shutouts. She also was the first to break the school's single season strikeouts record, but finished behind Chouinard in the final total.
Martz' season will go down as one of the best in DePaul history. Her 81 hits, seven triples and 26 wins all fell one shy of the respective single season records. Martz' 16 shutouts topped the previous best of 15 set by former All-American Nicole Terpstra in 1999. In addition, Martz cracked the top 10 in seven other categories: singles (third), runs (ninth), appearances (second), starts (second), innings pitched (second), complete games (second), strikeouts (second).
DePaul's season ended in the NCAA Region VII tournament when it lost to Notre Dame. It marked the fifth straight year DePaul has qualified for, and won at least one game, in the NCAA regionals.
