Blue Demons Win Opener in C-USA Tournament

Tampa, Fla.--Saskia Roberson crushed her seventh home run of the season and Lindsay Chouinard threw a two-hit shutout leading the 16th-ranked DePaul softball to a 3-0 victory over fifth-seeded Louisville (26-27) in the opening round of the Conference USA tournament. Chouinard hasn’t allowed an earned run in her last 81 1/3 innings pitched setting a new Conference USA record.
The Blue Demons pushed across the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Katy Kukman was hit-by-a-pitch opening the inning. After Kukman advanced to third on two wild pitches, Liz Bouck drew a walk placing runners on the corners. The two runners attempted a double steal, but Kukman was thrown out at home. Bouck advanced to third on a wild pitch and Sarah Martz brought her home with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Roberson made it 2-0 after drilling her home run to dead center field in the fourth inning.
DePaul picked up another run in the fifth inning when Sarah Douglas walked leading off the inning. After Kukman and Bouck sacrificed Douglas to third, Martz dropped a single in front of the center fielder picking up her second RBI of the game and giving the Blue Demons’ a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, the Blue Demons pushed two more runs across making it 5-0. Roberson laced a single to left field and Gina Ramacci followed with a single to right field moving pinch runner Jenny Doezie to third base. Dana Kenney ran for Ramacci and executed a double steal with Doezie making it 4-0. Sarah Douglas drilled a double to left center field capping off the DePaul scoring.
Chouinard improves to 26-4 and lowers her ERA to 0.44. She struck out five batters with no walks and recorded her 16th shutout and 27th complete game of the season.
Roberson finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored and Sarah Douglas went 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored. Martz added an RBI and run scored going 1-for-2.
The Blue Demons take their 44-9 record into tomorrow’s match up against third-seeded UAB. DePaul swept all three games against the Blazers in the regular season. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
