Down by as much as six in the second stanza, the Blue Demons (5-1) rallied to post a 63-60 victory over the Bobcats (2-5) at The Convocation Center.
Sammy Mejia led the Blue Demons with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists while Delonte Holland added 14 and LeVar Seals 10. Perhaps the biggest performance of the night came from freshman Marcus Heard who scored a season-high seven points, with two rebounds and an assist in 11 minutes of second half action.
Andre Brown was held without a field goal and scored just two points but did post a team-high seven rebounds.
DePaul opened the game with a flurry building a six-point lead behind Seals’ 10 points but Ohio continued to stick around and clawed out a one-point (32-31) lead at intermission.
The early part of the second half was all Ohio as the Bobcats as they upped their lead to six at 43-37 with 15:08 left to play before the Blue Demons went to work and used a 22-4 run keyed by Heard’s seven points to see the lead move to 58-46 with 4:50 left.
Ohio made one last surge getting as close as two (60-58) with 1:30 to play but DePaul held off a last second shot that would have tied the game and recorded its first road win of the season.
The Blue Demons will be in action again on Sunday when Notre Dame comes to the Allstate Arena at
Notes
Andre Brown’s streak of six consecutive double-doubles dating back to last season ended as he was held to two points (no field goals) and seven rebounds… LeVar Seals recorded a season-high 10 points as did Mejia (15) and Heard (seven)… this was DePaul’s first road win of the season.
Quotes
Head Coach Dave Leitao
“I am proud of our team in that they found a way to win on the road but we still have a lot of work to do. We need to put 40-minutes together because the deeper we get into our schedule, the tougher it’s going to be to try and come back if we do fall behind.”
“I am so happy for Marcus Heard. He has been working very hard in practice and it’s starting to show. He played his best game of the season by far and saved our tails in the second half.”
